Brave church yelp11/10/2023 We aren’t helpless as individuals unless we allow ourselves to be. I don’t think abuse is ever the victims fault but perhaps not trying to help yourself and your children is your fault. Imagine you’re going through this and have no one and nowhere to go. it just seems like a lot these people can’t accept taking accountability for situations they could’ve left or at least tried to, especially when they have good support systems and friends/family who obviously care and they acknowledge would house them. If my husband ever said he hated our daughter I’d leave that minute. not her daughter, she continues to leave her child with a man who she knows hurt her. She only speaks up and says her opinion about ring tattoos. S14E2 he openly cheated on me but I married him even tho I didn’t want to, my husband is abusing our infant daughter but I stayed. They’ll say he/she showed me exactly who they were but I went a long with it. The “victims” were definitely manipulated and mistreated but even somewhat acknowledged themselves that they chose this. Overall, this was a major disappointment.Ī lot of these situations are/were completely avoidable. It was a huge reminder that this is not investigative journalism (I know the host doesn’t claim to be). The way the host would chime in during interviews with hurtful and sarcastic remarks about Sylvie was really off-putting. The lack of competency here to discuss mental illness with nuance, contextualization, sensitivity, and knowledge is irresponsible. This podcast perpetuates harmful tropes and lack of understanding of complex mental health disorders. She also suffered from mental illness and is now dead with children and other family members who may one day listen to this. I am not condoning anything that Sylvie did. I was horrified and disgusted with how the host spoke with such disdain about Sylvie in Season 2. Although I think the concept of the podcast is certainly worth exploring, there are so many other podcasts doing this better while providing both victims and those suffering with mental illness with dignity and respect. I wanted this podcast to be so much better, both in production quality, and in the quality of the content. I’ve never left a review for a podcast before, but had to after listening to the first and second seasons.
